Underwater Communications Underneath Ice with MATS 3G

Sercel's MATS 3G acoustic modem was used on the nupiri muka, a fully autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) designed and built by International Submarine Engineering (ISE), that was sent on a mission in Antarctica.

The objective of the mission was to monitor the Thwaites Glacier which is melting fast, causing sea level rise.

The nupiri muka was sent under the ice on a 60km round trip to gather data. The two acoustic modems installed on the AUV monitored nupiri muka's progress for the first few kilometers before running completely autonomously.
